Syrian air defences intercepted "hostile targets" over the capital Damascus, Syrian state-media Ikhbariyah TV said early on Thursday. State news agency SANA also said air defence systems responded to an "Israeli attack" near Damascus.

There are regular airstrikes around Damascus and although Israel rarely claims responsibility officials admit to carrying out hundreds of strikes in Syria in recent years targeting what they say are sophisticated Iranian installations and weapons systems as well as those by Iran's proxies such as Hezbollah.

"Our air defences confronted an Israeli attack" west of the capital, Sana reported, adding that the attack was carried out from "occupied Syrian" airspace in the Golan Heights. Sana said air defences downed most of the missiles before they reached their targets.

Ikhbariyah TV said the attack was also launched from Lebanese airspace.

The nature of the targets was not clear and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

British-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said several missiles were fired on Syrian government forces and Iranian militias near Damascus, including in Al Kiswa town and Mezze military airport.

Israeli air strikes killed 12 pro-Iran militants near Damascus and in southern Syria early Thursday, the Observatory said.

Both Syrian and foreign fighters were killed in the strikes in the Kaswa area south of Damascus and the Ezra district of Daraa province, the Britain-based war monitor said.

Sana reporters stated that the missiles came in several waves and targeted al Kiswa area, Marj Al Sultan, the Baghdad Bridge and South of Izraa.

Israel has repeatedly bombed targets in Syria it views as having Iranian support, saying its goal was to end Tehran's military presence which Western intelligence sources say has expanded in recent years in the war-torn country.

Last month, the Syrian army said Israeli jets attacked the main T4 air base in Homs Governorate, and that Syrian air defences downed several missiles in strikes that caused only material damage.

In December, the Syrian army said their air defence systems intercepted missiles fired from the direction of Israel aimed at targets on the outskirts Damascus.

Also overnight on Thursday, the Israeli army said it had struck several Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in response to two mortar shells that were fired into Israel from Gaza.

This firing of mortars from Gaza came as Israel reduced the fishing zone around the enclave from 15 to 10 nautical miles on Wednesday, after a week of escalation sparked by the unveiling of the Trump administration's 'Deal of the Century' peace plan in Washington.

The Israeli military liaison to the Palestinians, known as Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, is Druze Maj Gen Kamil Abu Rokon.

In a statement Gen Rokon said the decision to limit Gaza's fishing zone "was taken after repeated terror activities were carried out from within the Strip against Israel's citizens over the past several weeks, which constitute a violation of Israeli sovereignty."
