Four Russian soldiers were killed in Syria by militant gunfire, said Russia’s defence ministry on Sunday.

The four military personnel were killed in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, it said in a statement carried by the Interfax news agency.

The ministry added that five other Russian troops were injured in the incidents, which took place when “several mobile terrorist groups attacked Syrian government artillery at night”.

Two Russian military advisers who directed the fire of the Syrian battery were killed on the spot, and two others died of their wounds.

The report added that 43 rebels had been killed in the same fighting.
