US actor George Clooney has threatened to sue a French magazine, which published the first photos of his one-month old twins.

Clooney said that the pictures published in Voici magazine on Friday had been taken illegally.

He said in a statement: "Over the last week photographers from Voici magazine scaled our fence, climbed our tree and illegally took pictures of our infants inside our home."

The Academy Award winning star said the the magazine "will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The safety of our children demands it."

Clooney and his wife Amal, a Lebanese-British human right's lawyer, welcomed twins Ella and Alexander in June.

However, the couple have not released any photos of their children or given interviews about becoming parents.

Grainy images published in Voici show the pair each holding one of the twins. The magazine said the Clooneys were at their villa in Lake Como, Italy at the time.

Voici has defended its decision to publish the pictures, arguing it was in the public interest.

A statement from the magazine read: "People love George Clooney and have been following his life story for years now.

"The birth of their twins, Ella and Alexander, has also been commented a lot, by themselves and their families.

"Those pictures do not put in danger Mr Clooney, his wife or their kids."
