New roads and bridges leading to the Expo 2020 Dubai site have opened to reduce travel times from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road.

A widening of roads from four lanes to six, along with other improvements over a 43 kilometre stretch, has edged the world exhibition development closer to completion.

The improved access via three new interchanges along Expo Road will help prepare the area for an expected 60,000 vehicles every hour.

Split into six phases of construction, the new transport network is one of the largest road projects undertaken by the Roads and Transport Authority, the body responsible for transport in Dubai.

“These works will ease the traffic movement from Expo Road to Sheikh Zayed Road,” said Mattar Al Tayer, RTA director general.

“Works covered widening and elevating Expo Road by constructing two bridges of six lanes in each direction along with turns and ramps to ensure smooth traffic flow from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road to Abu Dhabi and vice versa.

"The project will slash the transit time on Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road from the Al Houdh interchange to the entry of Al Maktoum Airport from 35 to six minutes and provide a direct exit from Expo northwards towards Dubai."
