DUBAI // Deira City Centre Metro station recorded the highest passenger numbers for the first three months of this year with 1,643,115 commuters passing through.
The Mall of the Emirates station, which was the busiest when the Red Line first opened, has dropped down to be the third most popular station, according to the Roads and Transport Authority, with 1,437,421 commuters.
The station with the second highest amount of traffic on the 52-kilometre Red Line was the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall stop, which tallied 1,573,337 commuters.
Al Ittihad station in Deira, a connecting station with the Green Line, was the fourth busiest.
The Red Line carried 21,803,610 passengers, while the 22-kilometre Green Line moved 11,537,390 commuters between January and the end of March. On the Green Line the station that proved the busiest was Al Fahidi in Bur Dubai, with 1,372,303 commuters.
Adnan Al Hammadi, the chief executive of the rail agency at the authority, said he was pleased with the substantial growth in Metro commuter numbers compared with last year. “This is what we seek to achieve ... attracting all segments of society to use the Metro as their premier means of transportation,” he said.
More than 33 million passengers used the Red and Green lines in the first quarter, an increase on the same last year, the state news agency Wam said.
