Sharjah Police have fined 274 drivers for speeding in the past eight months.

The offenders were caught on speed radars and by traffic patrols.

Some reckless motorists drove more than 80kph over the speed limit during the National Sterilisation Programme, when many stayed home to avoid the spread of Covid-19.

“One motorist among those fined was caught driving at a speed of 278kph,” Maj Mishaal bin Khadim, head of traffic engineering at Sharjah Police, said.

He said motorists who exceeded the speed limit by more than 80kph will be fined Dh3000 and get 23 black points on their driving licence.

“Their vehicles will be seized for 60 days,” he said.

Those who drove at more than 60kph over the speed limit will be fined Dh2,000 and receive 12 black points. Their cars will be confiscated for 30 days.

“Protecting lives comes first, therefore, Sharjah Police will continue its efforts to raise traffic awareness,” Maj Khadim said.

He urged drivers to stick to speed limits and follow traffic rules.
