ABU DHABI // Pay as you park areas in the capital will be allocated to permit-holding residents only from Sunday, the Department of Transport (DoT) said yesterday.

The initiative was in line continuing efforts to improve parking in the city, the department said.

Signs will be erected in "resident permit only" areas across Mawaqif. Officials said the programme would allocate parking spaces to 75 per cent of resident permit holders in each area.

The new service will allow resident permit holders to park in these areas between 9pm and 8am without any additional charges. Anyone parking in the area without a permit will be fined Dh500. However, parking for any vehicle will be allowed on Fridays and public holidays.

Residents can apply for the electronic permits from Mawaqif customer care centres in Hamdan Street, Marina Mall and the Central Market. The resident parking permit is available to home owners, tenants and their direct family members, with a maximum of two permits per household. Annual fees will be Dh800 for the first vehicle and Dh1,200 for the second. Officials said the verification and processing of resident permits would take a minimum of three working days. As part of the initiative, the DoT distributed thousands of leaflets to alert the public about theservice.
