Traffic diversions on Sheikh Zayed Road, towards Abu Dhabi, will begin on October 25.
Work on the diversions, a result of phase one of the Dubai Water Canal project, will commence in July. No date was given for when the diversions will end.
Mattar Al Tayer, the executive director of the Roads and Transport Authority, made the announcement in a recent visit to the construction site.
The project, which was announced last year, will include the construction of a bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road, comprising of eight lanes of traffic in each direction, which will cross over the canal.
Work on the canal will be carried out in three parts. The first two phases include the building of bridges on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Road.
The third phase will include works such as the construction of footbridges and marine transport stations.
Al Safa Park, which will be modified as part of the project, will be enhanced with the inclusion of a 1.5-kilometre urban public beach and areas for public leisure and sports activities.
There are also plans to introduce retail units and residential zones which will border the canal.
