SHARJAH // A three-year-old girl has been abandoned at Kuwait hospital, police said yesterday.

The child was found at the weekend by staff and taken to the police office at the hospital.

She was later given into the care of the Sharjah Social Care Centre, said Col Sultan Al Khayal, the director of the awareness section at Sharjah Police. Her parents have yet to be found.

Medical examinations revealed the girl had several bruises and burns on her body. A police spokesman said officers believed she had been abandoned intentionally.

A number of children have been  abandoned in Sharjah in recent years, mostly newborns.

This was the first incident involving a child aged 3, said Col Al Khayal.
