DUBAI // The bodies of the father and daughter who died in a murder-suicide in their Bur Dubai apartment last month were cremated today, according to relatives.

The bodies were flown to their Kerala home yesterday afternoon on an Emirates flight.

They were cremated at 7.30am UAE time after their bodies were kept at their home in the Kannur district for a short time so that people could pay their last respects. Two relatives had accompanied the bodies to India.

A relative said the child's mother, Sreesha, 29, who survived the suicide bid, remains in hospital.

Rijesh Nambiar, in his thirties, and his daughter Avantika, 5, were found dead in their apartment on January 14.

Police said Rijesh was found hanging from the ceiling and his daughter was suffocated, using a pillow. Sreesha was found locked in a room and bleeding severely following a cut to her wrist.

Sreesha was working as an accounts co-ordinator at Al Reyami Interiors. Colleagues said that they tried to meet her after she was hospitalised but were not given permission. "We really sympathise with what happened to her. She is a nice person," said a colleague.

Rijesh left his family a suicide note bidding them farewell and telling them he would go to another life, and a second note for Dubai Police explaining why he was taking his own life.

Police said he said claimed to have financial problems and that he had problems with his former sponsor, who is also Indian.
