The mother, who was sleeping in a room with the four children, screamed to her husband for help but he was unable to get to the door from the inside of the house.

"The man went outside and broke a window and was screaming at her to hand him the children but she was unable to get them to him," a neighbour said.

It is understood that the four children died of burns and smoke inhalation at Tawam Hospital, while the mother died on the way to the hospital about 4.40am.

The father is believed to be in intensive care at the hospital.

The children are believed to have all been aged 10 and under.
