Indian politician Amar Singh, who was on a private visit to Dubai, was admitted to the Welcare Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Mr Singh, 57, a member of the upper house of the Indian parliament or Rajya Sabha, was taken to the hospital after he fainted at the Dubai International Airport around 4pm. He was boarding a flight to Singapore for medical treatment when his sugar levels dropped, said Mr Vijay Kumar Garodia, a close friend.

"He lost consciousness. He is doing well now. Doctors are observing him. He's managed to get timely treatment," he said.

Mr Garodia said the former Samajwadi Party leader was recovering but would be kept in the hospital for another "day or two."

"He'll then leave for Singapore for final treatment. He was here on a personal visit to meet friends."

Mr Singh is said to be undergoing treatment for his kidneys in Singapore.
