ABU DHABI // Drivers have been warned to avoid speeding up when traffic lights turn amber as infrared technology will catch anyone running a red light.

The police traffic and patrols directorate said the advanced technology uses an infrared light without a flash to spot violations such as running red lights, speed limit violations, unsafe lane changes, stopping over crosswalk lines and overtaking at junctions.

Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harthi, head of the police directorate, said that the monitoring system launched in the emirate last year is a five-year project to enhance safety at junctions.

It will involve mounting more than 159 infrared cameras at junctions in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and the Western Region.

Phase One of the system involved the installation of traffic cameras at 40 junctions in Abu Dhabi city.
