More than 20 sports pitches for beach volleyball, football and tennis are now open for the public on Abu Dhabi’s Hudayriat Island.

Officials hope the playing fields will encourage more aspiring athletes to take up regular exercise.

The venues can be booked by individuals or groups online in advance and are free of charge.

The island is accessed via a bridge next to Al Bateen beach and was inaugurated by the Abu Dhabi Municipality in May last year.

"The world-standard fields offer people a chance to practice all kinds of sports and to enjoy the atmosphere of the island and its services without having to pay any fees," Abu Dhabi Municipality said.

The authority said the aim was to “make society happy [and] promote healthy living.”

The facilities include four beach-football fields, four artificial grass football pitches and six beach volleyball sites.

There are also four basketball courts and four tennis courts. The facilities are open every day from 8am until midnight.

More facilities for sporting enthusiasts are due to open on the island and a campsite is also planned. The island boasts a large beach as well as a running and cycling track.
