Here’s your chance to help a charity and the environment while safely disposing old electronics gathering dust in your junk drawer.

Three malls – Deira City Centre, Mirdif City Centre and Sharjah City Centre – are encouraging shoppers to drop off old electronics as part of their Recycle Your Gadget campaign.

Specially-marked bins have been installed throughout the malls to receive used mobile phones, computers and other gadgets until Oct. 31.

The electronic waste will be recycled and donated to the Red Crescent. Gadgets in good condition will be given to the less fortunate, while other electronic parts will be sold, with proceeds benefiting the underprivileged.

Eighty-eight per cent of smart phone users in the UAE have never recycled their phones, according to Bee’ah, the first environmental and waste management company. Between 20 to 50 million tonnes of e-waste is produced globally each year, with only 14 per cent of it being recycled.

The campaign aims to chip away at this number.

The Recycle Your Gadget initiative is part of City Centres’ electronic campaign running through the month of October. The campaign offers shoppers who spend between DH200 and DH399 a daily chance to win a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or an 85” Samsung television.
