An Emirati man was arrested in connection to a hit and run incident that killed an Arab man in Ras Al Khaimah.

On Friday, RAK police were called to the site of an accident whereby an Arab man, 33, had been hit by a speeding vehicle and the motorist had fled the area.

“Medical aids were provided to the victim but he died due to his severe injuries caused by the hit,” said Brig Dr Mohammed Al Humaidi, director general of central operations at RAK Police.

He said the victim was stood on the side of the road tending to his car that had broken down when he was hit by the suspected 28-year-old speeding motorist.

Police tracked down the owner of the vehicle arrested the suspect a few hours later.

“The driver said that he lost control of the vehicle and accidentally hit the victim and sped away from the scene,” Brig Dr Al Humaidi said.

The body of the victim was taken to hospital and the case has been referred to prosecutors for legal action.

Brig Dr Al Humaidi urged residents to abide by traffic rules and never flee from an accident as it can lead to several penalties.

According to the UAE's amended traffic law that came into effect last year, driving away from the scene of an accident will result in a Dh500 fine for light vehicles. The driver will be penalised with eight black points and their vehicle will be confiscated for seven days.

Drivers who cause serious injury to people or death will be referred to courts.
