A man has appeared in court charged with smuggling more than a kilogram of crystal meth in capsules he swallowed.

Dubai Criminal Court heard how the Nigerian defendant arrived at Dubai International Airport on July 31 on a tourist visa.

Customs inspectors grew suspicious after the suspect appeared anxious when asked questions about where he had flown to the UAE from.

And after completing a body X-ray, officials discovered 63 capsules of the drug in his stomach.

“He was tense and sweaty,” one customs officer told the court. “When I asked him where had he come from he just couldn’t talk. I felt something was wrong.”

During police questioning, the man admitted to carrying the drugs and that he knew he was acting illegally.

He said he had been promised $2,000 (Dh7,350) to hand over the capsules to an unidentified contact once he arrived in the city. He denied planning to sell the drugs himself.

A verdict is expected to be given on October 28.
