A driver has been arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a young girl after she fell asleep on a school bus.
The eight-year-old, described only as Asian, woke to find the man trying to touch her, the girl later told Ajman Police. The incident happened on Thursday morning in the emirate's Liwara area.
A passerby spotted the girl and the driver inside and raised the alarm.
"Police patrols were dispatched to the scene and officers found that the Asian man [that raised the alarm] had broken the bus window," said Lt Col Ali Jaber Al Shamsi, director of the police control centre.
The girl was taken to hospital for examination and later was taken to a police support centre.
“The girl told police that she fell asleep in the school bus in the morning and did not leave the bus with the other pupils. When she woke up, she found the Asian driver was trying to assault her. He left her in the bus and closed the door and windows," Lt Col Al Shamsi said.
The driver was arrested. Police said he denied the girl’s accusations and said he was not aware that she was on board. The investigation continues.
There was no surveillance camera or supervisor on the bus, police said.
