DUBAI // A man tried to smuggle cocaine into the country by soaking his clothes in a liquid form of the drug, a court heard yesterday.

Prosecutors told the Criminal Court that MY, a 28-year-old trader from Lebanon, was stopped at Dubai International Airport on June 5 when a policeman noticed a strange smell emanating from one of his bags.

The officer ND, a 38-year-old Emirati, said that he was checking transit passengers luggage at about 11.30pm when he searched the man's three bags. "After checking his flight details, I found he was coming from Brazil and heading to Syria," said the policeman.

The clothes inside the man's bags were also suspiciously heavy, weighing 30 kilograms. Tests done on them showed they had been soaked in liquid cocaine.

The man was interrogated and told officers he was paid US$5,000 to take the bag to Syria.

He was not present in court to enter a plea. The case was adjourned to October 14.
