DUBAI // A man who terminated his girlfriend's pregnancy and then attacked her with a stick was sentenced to two years in prison.
MA, 44, a Bangladeshi driver, was charged with having consensual sex with his compatriot, LS, a 30-year-old cleaner, then getting her pregnant.
When he discovered the pregnancy he asked her to abort it. LS refused, and the man threatened to kill her. On January 23 he beat her with his hands and a stick before forcing her to take tablets that caused her to lose the baby.
LS, who was also charged with having consensual sex, said she had been forced into it by the driver. However the court convicted her and sentenced her to six months in prison.
When she discovered she was pregnant, she said she asked the driver to marry her. According to court records, he refused.
"He beat me all over my body with a wooden stick before leaving to buy the tablets," she said in records.
He ordered her to take the tablets and but she refused. Brandishing a knife, he told her he would kill her before pushing six tablets down her throat and two others into her genitalia, which caused her to start bleeding.
The cleaner went to the police station and reported him. He was arrested at his work place.
Both defendants will be deported after completing their jail terms.
