A drunk man lashed out at his taxi driver and attacked two police officers called to deal with the assault, Dubai Criminal Court has heard.

The 21-year-old from Spain was leaving the bar of a five-star hotel in Al Barsha in the city with a group of friends when the incident happened.

After getting into taxi the man punched the Pakistani driver for no apparent reason, according to his friends.

When police arrived, the defendant attacked one and bit the other on the left hand.

“We received the report made by the driver and when we got to the location the accused was not acting normal and was obviously drunk,” a policeman told the court.

“I tried to calm him down but he assaulted me. When my colleague stepped in to calm him down, he bit him.”

The assault happened on March 23 this year. When officers got to the scene they handcuffed the defendant as he screamed abuse at them.

The man’s friend, a Filipino woman, 32, told prosecutors that he had lashed out at their taxi driver for no reason. “He did resist the police when they arrived,” she said.

The defendant was charged with assaulting the police officers and insulting them using inappropriate language.

In court he denied the charges, claiming he was too drunk to recall what had happened.

The hearing was adjourned until November 5.
