DUBAI // A drunk man kicked a police officer in the groin after being asked for his ID card, a court heard today.

Two officers approached NS, 28, from Nigeria, at the Bani Yas Metro station on November 17 last year suspecting he was drunk.

When they asked for his ID card he ran off and when they caught up with him he assaulted both officers breaking one of their fingers and kicking one of them in the groin.

"It was nearly 8.10pm when we approached the man, believing he was drunk," recalled HR, 23, one of the two policeman.

A friend accompanying the defendant politely presented his ID card to the officers, but the defendant started running away, causing panic among some of the onlooking Metro passengers.

The officers chased and caught the man who lashed out violently as they tried to handcuff him, punching them both in the face and kicking Corporal YY, 22, in the groin.

The corporal also sustained a broken finger in the struggle and needed surgery.

At the Criminal Court the man denied charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. The case was adjourned to June 3.
