ABU DHABI // A car crashed through the window of the women’s branch of Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank near Khalidiya Mall today after the driver accidentally engaged the accelerator instead of the brake.

A spokeswoman for ADIB said: “The window will be fixed as soon as possible. Until that time, we will put on extra security. All our staff and customers are safe.”

The accident happened at about  10.40am, said a member of the operations team of Securiguard, which runs security at the bank.

“Our lady guard was inside the bank when it happened but we were informed that the driver pressed on the accelerator while he was parking,” he said.

“We immediately arranged two additional security staff as directed by the bank.”

Police arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area.

The driver, who identified himself only as Mohammed, was unhurt and there was no damage to his car, a white Toyota Innova. He said there was a "problem" with his accelerator.
