UBAI // Dubai International Cricket Stadium would the ideal place to begin the revival of Test cricket, according to the former Australia batsman, Dean Jones. Jones, who played 52 Tests and 164 one-day internationals for his country, believes the ICC's plans for a Test cricket world championship could provide the antidote to the dwindling interest in the format. The Dubai-based ruling body have discussed the feasibility of such a scheme, and Jones thinks they have the perfect venue to host the potential final right on their doorstep. "In terms of Test cricket we can't gravitate to it and say, 'Who is the best team in the world?' We love finals. Everything in sport is built around finals," said Jones.
"We still haven't got that in Test cricket. We need to have Australia v India, or Australia v England, as a head to head in Dubai, and play a world championship season once every four years. The game needs it." Jones, who is now recognised as much for his forthright views in the commentary box as his commendable playing feats, regards winning the 1987 50-over World Cup as his finest moment in the game. "We have the World Twenty20 about to happen in May, when people will be able to say, 'We are the world champions'," added Jones, who is in Dubai to host a Foster's Legends of Cricket dinner. "I won a World Cup in 1987 in India, in front of 130,000 people. It is one of the great feelings in life, to be a World Cup champion. "Forget about your average, making 100 here or 200 there, to be a world champion or an Ashes champion is a big honour."
