Left-handed batsmen Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock hit sublime centuries as South Africa fought hard to reach 385-8 in the first Test against India in Visakhapatnam.

After losing their first three wickets late on day two, it seemed like the Proteas wouldn't come even close to India's score of 502. But De Kock made 111 and added 164 runs with opener Elgar, who scored 160, to keep India on the field for the entire third day.

Off-spinner Ravi Ashwin did not lose his intensity though, picking up his 27th five-wicket haul in 66 Tests. At stumps, the Proteas were trailing by 117 runs.

Wicketkeeper-batsman de Kock completed his fifth Test ton with a six off Ashwin before being bowled by the spinner. Ashwin then removed Vernon Philander for nought.

However, it was Elgar who led the revival for South Africa after they had slipped to 63-4. The opener credited his stint with Surrey in the county championship for his fine effort.

"I have played five months of county cricket. That's an extremely big motivating factor and that always improves me as a player," Elgar was quoted as saying by AFP.

"I'd like to think that this innings didn't come by fluke, but came because I have done the hard work. I have spent a lot of time away from home which you have got to sacrifice."

Elgar also put on 115 with captain Faf du Plessis for the fifth wicket.

On his part, Ashwin too credited his experience in county cricket – with Nottinghamshire – for his results.

"I am elated to be back. It is always special for India. There is nothing like picking up a five wicket haul for your country," said Ashwin.

"This place is very special for me but I enjoyed a five wicket haul for Nottingham too. One is not too lesser than the other."
