Uncapped all-rounder Shivam Dube was called up to the Indian team for the home T20 series against Bangladesh which begins next month.
Dube has been on the radar of the selectors for some time. In 2018, he hit five successive sixes in a domestic T20 match and repeated that feat during a first-class match the same year.
The all-rounder bowls decent seamers and has been drafted in as a replacement for the injured Hardik Pandya.
Chief selector MSK Prasad said the time is right to give Dube a chance at the highest level. "We all felt that the role Shivam has to deliver in, he fits in much better," Prasad said.
"He bats aggressively, his performances in the India A series in West Indies and also against South Africa were phenomenal. Dube has gone up by leaps and bounds."
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli was omitted from the T20 squad but will lead the side for the subsequent Tests. The three-match T20 series begins on November 3 and the two-Test clash on November 14.
Rohit Sharma will captain the T20 team. Also, wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal were recalled to the white-ball side.
There is no clarity on the future of veteran wicketkeeper MS Dhoini, who was not picked for the T20s. Selector Prasad said the management is looking to back young keepers and that Dhoni's future is "purely his personal decision".
Earlier, Bangladesh had threatened to call off the tour over a pay dispute, but the board and players resolved their differences late on Wednesday. India have retained the Test side that blanked the Proteas 3-0.
