Home Improvements: Tackling germs in the kitchen

When it comes to giving your kitchen a clean, make sure to address those germ-infested hotspots and hard-to-reach areas.

There are plenty of germ-infested hot spots and tough-to-clean areas in your kitchen, so be sure to take a methodical approach when scrubbing time comes.

Start with the stove. Cover drip pans, hobs and knobs in warm, soapy water and leave to soak while you work your way, clockwise, around the rest of your kitchen until you end up back at the stove, which should by then be easier to clean.

Make sure to disinfect kitchen surfaces properly as there will be plenty of bacteria lurking there. You can make your own antibacterial cleaning agent by mixing two cups of water with 20 drops of tea tree oil and 20 drops of lavender in a spray bottle.

Pay special attention to your sink as it's likely that there are more bacteria lurking there than in your toilet bowl. Yup, afraid so. Scrub with soap and water and then spray with a mist of vinegar and leave to air dry. If you have a stainless-steel sink, make it shine by placing a few drops of mineral oil on a soft cloth and buffing.

If you have cast-iron pans that need cleaning, do not use liquid soap or scrub them with anything abrasive. If water and a soft dishcloth don't do the trick, try salt. Rub the surface with a few tablespoons of salt and a paper towel and then rinse.
