Their reaction is always the same. Friends, family and pretty much anyone unused to the American-sized and calorific content populating the menu at the Cheesecake Factory always gasp when they see this one particular dish – Fried Macaroni & Cheese Balls.

I have heard the words “disgusting”, “stomach-churning” and “heart attack waiting to happen” all used to describe this appetiser, but that is all before it’s been sampled.

Because although they look innocent, served on their small white plate, these babies are blooming delicious. They are exactly as they have been described – breadcrumb-covered balls of macaroni cheese, deep fried and served with a yummy marinara sauce. If you think about your waistline, then you are bound to have second thoughts, but throw such old-fashioned values out the window and tuck in – I promise you will not be disappointed.

The sweet tomatoes of the marinara complement the thick cheese sauce and the crunch of the breadcrumbs gives just the edge you need to want to eat more and more. Although I have to say, a plate of four between two people is quite enough for one sitting.
