An Emirati naval officer has been ordered by a US court to pay US$1.2 million (Dh4.4m) to a former domestic worker who claimed she had been emotionally abused.
Elizabeth Ballesteros, a Filipina, accused Col Arif Mohamed Saeed Mohamed Al Ali of not paying her and confining her to his house.
US District Court Judge John McConnell yesterday ordered Col Al Ali to pay Ms Ballesteros for forcing her to be on call 24 hours a day, every day, and for what he called "outrageous and inhumane conduct".
