Dubai's transport authorities have raised the speed limit on a road linking a series of new desert communities.

Drivers will be able to travel at 100kph on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street - in the section between Dubai-Al Ain Road and Al Yalayes Road - from Sunday, March 17. The limit was previously 90kph.

The road runs between the two major inter-emirate motorways, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.

It links desert communities together and with Dubai Studio City, Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City.

Dubai allows motorists to travel at up to 20kph above the advertised speed on major highways.

“Measures will be taken to adjust the speed cameras and set them at 120kph for the safety of road users," said Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Dubai Police's assistant commander-in-chief.

Last year, Abu Dhabi abolished the 20kph 'buffer' to avoid confusion and other emirates are considering the same move.
