SHARJAH // A campaign to ensure buildings meet strict safety rules has been launched.
The year-long push aims to raise awareness among residents and building owners about regulations, such as the use of flammable materials.
The campaign – by authorities including Sharjah Municipality – will also highlight the need to follow an approved safety plan, said Salah bin Butti, director of Sharjah Department of Planning and Survey.
“There are so many building owners who make additions and modifications in the building that are not allowed,” he said.
“All such modifications must be brought to the planning section, documented, approved and incorporated into the building plan.”
Engineer Khalifa Al Suwaidi, director of the engineering department at the municipality, said the campaign would ensure that rules governing locks on windows and balconies, designed to prevent children falling, were adhered to.
Officials will check for the use of banned combustible materials during construction.
Mr Al Suwaidi said the municipality would issue fines to building owners who failed to address safety issues.
The campaign is being undertaken in cooperation with the municipality and Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa).
Mr bin Butti said teams of officials would carry out inspections across the emirate, starting with newer neighbourhoods before moving on to older areas.
New buildings must adhere to safety regulations before a building permit is issued.
Sewa is offer a 50 per cent discount on connection charges for new buildings that meet safety standards and receive building permits.
