SHARJAH // A Dh500,000 project to upgrade the amenities on Khor Fakkan Corniche has started.

The work will improve five shower facilities and six public toilets along the four-kilometre Corniche and is expected to be completed in December, Sharjah public works department said.

Ali Al Swaidi, director of Sharjah public works, said the project would enhance the area’s beauty and amenity.

He said that his department was working under the direction and guidance of Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, and had responded to public demand for upgraded facilities at the Corniche.

Last summer there was a clamour from residents and visitors for improvements on the Corniche which Sharjah had listened to, said Mr Al Swaidi.

“This step is very important and the area needs this kind of improvement,” said Khamis Al Naqbi, 28, who wanted to see more amenities for the area.

“Many visitors come during the weekends and the public facilities are not enough to cope – they should consider adding more facilities to cover the need,” he said.

Fatima Al Hammadi said the upgrade was appreciated but also requested that more shaded seating areas be built.

“We had a major problem with the public toilets at the Corniche, and I am glad they have started with the renovation, and I hope that they will assign employees to be there all the time to keep the place clean and in good condition,” said Ms Al Hammadi, 32.

“They should also consider adding more shaded areas and dedicate some areas to be only for families.”

The Corniche area has a public library, community clubs, small shopping centres and an expo centre that hosts seasonal festivals.
