SHARJAH // A baby found abandoned in Sharjah is expected to be handed to staff at the Sharjah Social Care Centre today while police search for her parents.

The 10-day-old girl was discovered next to a villa in Al Heera and taken to Al Qassimi Hospital.

Naema Al Nakhi, the director of Al Qassimi Hospital's social services centre, said yesterday: "She is still undergoing some medical examinations and we hope to have her health card ready by tomorrow.

"If all goes well with her, she will be handed to the social-care centre."

She was the second baby discovered in Sharjah this year. A boy aged only 10 days was found in Al Dhaid in January.

Another boy, abandoned in Umm Al Quwain last year, has also been placed with the Sharjah centre.

Named Rashid by staff at the UAQ Hospital who have been caring for him for almost year, the boy was found in the Ramla area near a rubbish bin.

Doctors believe he was a day old when he was found.

"He is an active and bright boy," said a hospital spokesman. "Our nurses and doctors who have been caring for Rashid will definitely miss him."

Last year, UAQ hospital handed two babies, each about a year old, to the Sharjah centre. UAQ does not have a social-care centre of its own.
