A photographer who raped a British nurse at the Dubai apartment they shared has been handed a five-year jail sentence.

The 26-year-old entered the victim's bedroom and locked the door before carrying out the attack, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The court was told that the Syrian man had been discussing plans the pair had to move home when he began to touch and kiss his 51-year-old roommate before restraining her and stripping her naked.

After he subjected the woman to the shocking ordeal, the man left the room, allowing the victim to call police.

The incident took place on October 19, 2017, at the shared residence in Al Barsha.

The offender denied the rape charge when he first appeared in court last May.

“We were planning to move to a villa, so he came to my room and wanted to talk about that,” said the victim.

“I fought back but he was much stronger.

“He made me feel so cheap, I was shocked and didn't know what to do. Then I just picked up my phone and rang police.”

The man was arrested four days later.

He was convicted of rape and sentenced to five years in prison, to be followed by deportation.
