DUBAI // Street vendors, beggars and illegal car washers were among the 104 illegal residents arrested in Dubai last month.

Along with illegal residents, police seized 1,788 counterfeit products, including 1,171 DVDs and pirated films, 61 pornographic movies, 212 foodstuff items, 344 ready-made garments, perfumes, cameras, and watches.

"Inspectors conduct daily spot checks in streets and public places to prevent street vending, begging and car washing in public places," said Obeid Ibrahim Marzouqi, head of market management section at Dubai Municipality.

"Last month, they caught 62 street vendors, nine car washers and 13 illegal butchers and fish cleaners," he said.

Those arrested will be handed over to the Dubai Naturalization and Residency Department for deportation in coordination with Dubai Police.

Yesterday, Dubai Police launched its Ramadan anti-begging campaign and assigned toll-free number 800 243 to receive complaints from the public around the clock.
