Tenants and homeowners travelling for the summer have been urged to protect their homes by registering for Dubai Police's security service.

Lt Col Rashid Al Falasi, director of the Criminal Control at the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said registrations for the Home Security Service programme had increased by 10 percent compared to last year.

Since its launch in 2001 the service has helped reduce the rate of home robberies, he said.

Homeowners can register for the programme on the Dubai Police General Command website, through the Dubai Police smartphone app or by filling out a Home Security form at a police station customer service centre.

Lt Col Al Falasi advised residents to deposit money and valuables in banks, and to keep cars parked in a closed garage.

He recommended asking a friend to regularly check on the home and look for water leaks or electrical damage.

Lt Col Al Falasi also said residents and citizens should make sure the inside of their homes is not visible so thieves will be unable to tell if the home is empty.

He recommended all windows and doors be electronically locked to that they are difficult to open.

Police have previously said that no villas that registered with the Dubai Police home security services have been robbed.
