UMM AL QAWAIN // Seven workers have been injured after a concrete roof in the structure they were building caved in, police have confirmed.

The workplace accident happened on Saturday at around 9pm as contractors were pouring concrete on the third floor of a project in the Al Seerat area, said Lt Col Khamis Saleem Buharoon, the director of the police operations department.

“The operations room was notified by the engineers on duty and within five minutes police rescue teams and ambulances were already on the scene,” he said. “We made all efforts to save the injured workers and fortunately no one got trapped beneath the wet rubble.”

The injured were taken to the UAQ Hospital. Four workers were still hospitalised as of yesterday, a hospital spokesman said.

“Those still in hospital have some moderate injuries and will be discharged in the range of three to five days,” the spokesman said.

The exact cause of the collapse was still unclear, Lt Col Buharoon said. Police and municipal officials were co-ordinating the investigations into the incident, he said.
