DUBAI// The difference in the price of bottled water between what is sold in supermarkets and restaurants has been an issue of contention for many consumers. A survey of the price of bottled water in restaurants and cafes run by The National in Abu Dhabi and Dubai last year found an average mark up of Dh28 - a 300 per cent increase on the usual supermarket price of Dh7.50.
It can be a source of frustration for customers, but if they feel they have been overcharged they can take action.
The Ministry of Economy has a dedicated consumer hotline people can call to lodge a complaint.
"We do get people complaining about the cost of water in cafes and restaurants," said an official taking calls from the hotline. "Once we get the complaint then one of our inspectors will go to the business in question as a normal customer and ask for a bottle of water."
If the price is high, then the establishment would most likely be given an initial warning and if no action is taken on the price, fines could follow, he said.
To report overpriced water contact the ministry's consumer protection hotline on 600 522225.
