World's biggest countdown: Expo 2020 milestone marked at Burj Khalifa

The two-year countdown to Expo 2020 Dubai has been marked in the biggest way possible – with a striking display at Burj Khalifa.

The world fair will be brought to the Middle East for the first time from October 20, 2020 – and organisers got the celebrations started early as a huge countdown illuminated the world's tallest building.

The eye-catching countdown lit up the record-breaking structure at 8.20pm (20.20) on Saturday to record the milestone moment in style.

Crowds turned out in force to witness the spectacular event and enjoy an evening crammed with activities, including live music, artistic performances and a specially choreographed Dubai Fountain show.

The expo will run for six months until April 10, 2021 and is expected to attract 25 million visits with about 70 per cent of visitors from outside the UAE.

More than 180 countries are expected to take part in the global event, with 40,000 construction workers ensuring the sprawling Expo site is ready in time.
