DUBAI // A 49-year-old Emirati man was arrested on Tuesday in the South Indian state of Hyderabad on charges of cheating, harassing and demanding 100,000 rupees (Dh7,359) in dowry from his Indian wife, whom he married three years ago.

AA, a local businessman, is in a Hyderabad prison after his wife charged him with demanding money, physical and mental harassment, and refusal to take her to the UAE, which brought about the cheating charge.

"He kept promising he will take her to Dubai," said Ram Mohan Rao, assistant commissioner of police at the Charminar police station in Hyderabad.

"On his recent visit, he demanded money from her. She wanted to be taken to Dubai but he's been avoiding it since their marriage," he said.

Police said the woman accused him of only meeting her in a hotel every time he visited Hyderabad for a few days. He was arrested from a local city hotel on Tuesday evening.

"We have intimated the UAE embassy as per formalities and have seized his passport. He will have to stay in jail for a minimum of two weeks, before he can be bailed," Mr Rao said.

Police said the couple were legally married, and that there is a marriage certificate to prove it.

AA is lodged in the Chanchalgud Central Prison.
