A Dubai woman suffered partial hearing loss after being hit with a shoe by an estranged friend, a court heard.

The Pakistani defendant, 25, allegedly locked the Indian student in his car before subjecting her to a sustained assault.

The woman, 21, said she and the accused had struck up a friendship on Facebook but a rift was caused when she rejected his marriage proposal.

“He started saying he loved me and wanted to marry me and I told him we are only friends. When he insisted I stopped seeing him or talking to him,” she said.

But after being bombarded with calls from the man, she decided to go to his family home to tell his father of his behaviour, Dubai Criminal Court was told.

“I parked my car and walked towards his house in Al Muhaisnah but he stopped me then forced me into the back seat of his car.”

She said her former friend then starting hitting her and snatched her phone out of her hands when she tried to call for help.

“He hit me using his hands then bit me on the right arm and slapped me on the right cheek with a shoe. Then I jumped to the front seat and ran out of the car.”

She ran to her home and informed her father, who then took her to the police station to report the incident, which is alleged to have taken place on August 26 of last year.

A medical report stated she had suffered from a partial hearing loss due to an assault.

The defendant denied a charge of assault when he appeared in court, insisting she had attacked him.

The case was adjourned until May 26, when a verdict is due to be issued.
