Dubai // A suspected illegal resident who offered police Dh500 to release him from custody was yesterday jailed for six months for bribery.
M S, 31, was sentenced at Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance and was also referred to the Immigration Court to face charges of being an illegal resident.
One of the arresting officers, the patrolman Dawood al Baloushi, told prosecutors he was in the Naif area with his partner on June 24 when he saw M S, who aroused suspicion by walking alone in a commercial trade area at 2am.
The officer said that M S appeared to be uneasy and, when officers approached him asking him for his identification card, he admitted staying in the UAE illegally, according to the patrolman's testimony to prosecutors.
The second patrolman, Humood al Shabiebi, testified that M S attempted to bribe them for his freedom while in the police vehicle.
When the second officer feigned interest, M S pulled Dh500 from his pocket, records show.
Police then told the plumber he had just committed a second offence by trying to bribe an official.
