DUBAI // A corporal at the Abu Dhabi police this morning denied sexually assaulting a female student in public.

AS, 23, told the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours this morning he was innocent of assaulting the 24-year-old Bahraini woman in her car last year.

According to court records, AS approached the woman's car about 9.30pm in Umm Suquiem 1 while she was stopped at an Enoc petrol station and waved at her. When she did not give him much attention, he surprised her by opening the door to the front passenger’s seat and sitting next to her.

She testified that when he jumped into the car, she was terrified and ran.

"He chased me and i was screaming for help,” she said.

AS grabbed both her hands when she tried to push him away, records show.

She called police, who arrived and arrested him, records said.

When questioned, AS said he knew the victim's friend, FA, who was with her at the petrol station, and had simply gone to greet her.

AS said the woman insulted him and told him “you are an animal, you lack manners.”

The next hearing was scheduled for April 5 to allow the defence lawyer review a copy of the file.
