ABU DHABI // The United Nations will release an important aid document in Abu Dhabi next month and a source close to the world body said the decision was made as a tribute to the UAE's support of international humanitarian causes. The 2008 Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) document, which helps aid donors allocate resources to impoverished countries, will be released in the capital on Nov 24, said Sarah El-Khazin Bouvier, the UN regional emergency response officer for the Middle East.
It is the first time the document, an annual publication, has been released anywhere other than at the UN headquarters in New York or the UN's regional office in Geneva. Ceremonies marking its publication will also be held in New York and Geneva. A source close to the UN confirmed that the decision to publish the document in Abu Dhabi was made in recognition of the sums donated to needy countries by the oil-rich UAE.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister, helped arrange the launch. A spokesman for his office was unavailable for comment. Ms Bouvier said: "For the first time the document will be launched in this region, Geneva and New York. It will be done under the auspices of Sheikh Hamdan." The CAP is a breakdown of aid donations to poor countries, which allows potential donors to identify which needs their money the most.
