KINGSTON, Jamaica // Jamaica's Reggae Boyz, all-but eliminated from contention for the 2014 World Cup, named Winfried Schaefer as their new coach on Wednesday for the remainder of Concacaf qualifying matches.
The 63-year-old German – who was coach at Arabian Gulf League club teams Al Ahli from 2005-2007 and Al Ain from 2007-2009 – will guide Jamaica for the final four matches after Theodore Whitmore was fired following the Reggae Boyz's woeful qualifying start, including four losses in a row.
The Jamaicans were on the bottom of the table with only two points from six matches and little hope of taking one of three available World Cup 2014 spots from the six-team round robin competition, or even the chance to play New Zealand for a berth that goes to the fourth-place finisher.
Schaefer's contract will last into November with an option to be renewed. His debut with Jamaica will be on september 6 when the Reggae Boyz visit Panama.
Schaefer coached Cameroon to the African Nations Cup in 2002 and a runner-up showing in the 2003 Confederations Cup.
"At this time Jamaica need an accomplished and experienced coach and this is what we have found in Mr Schafer," said Horace Burrell, president of the Jamaican Football Federation.
