Could Manchester City have struck upon the future of football shirts?

The Premier League club has just unveiled a special mashup celebration shirt in collaboration with its kit-maker Nike.

The multicoloured shirt features nine fan-favourite kits blended into one and is now available for fans to pre-order.

City said that the limited-edition jersey will be debuted as a pre-match option before their match against Fulham this weekend.

Only 6,000 of them will be made and they will be individually numbered. They will be available to buy from April 10.

Nike and City have been in partnership since 2013, during which the club have won six major trophies.

Has this been done before by Nike or another brand?

Yes, there was a similar creation by Nike back in 2014 when it created a commemorative shirt with Arsenal.

This came after the club's FA Cup victory and marked 20 years of the sportswear giant working with the Gunners.

Nike explained at the time: "The shirt, which uses the current 2013-14 home kit as its base, incorporates a unique design that is inspired by a selection of iconic Arsenal kits from the past two decades.

"As well as featuring industry-leading innovation, each Nike shirt throughout the 20-year partnership is evocative of key moments in Arsenal’s rich history – from the kit worn during the 2003-04 ‘Invincibles’ season, to the celebratory redcurrant shirt that marked the final farewell to Highbury in 2005."

Sadly, the shirt was never put on sale, instead being put on display at NikeTown London and then in the Arsenal Football Club Museum.

What else has been going on in the world of kits?

Fans of video game Fifa 19 will be familiar with the EA Sports x Adidas Limited Edition Jerseys which were released at the end of last year.

These were special designs for four clubs - Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich - which featured in the game and could also be bought in physical form by fans.

As you can see in the tweet below, they are super jazzy!
