When Gatsby met Tiffany

When Tiffany & Co. announced it was collaborating with the director Baz Luhrmann on the new film version of The Great Gatsby, we couldn't have thought of a more appropriate partnership to capture the opulence of the Jazz Age and the golden era of fine jewellery.

Catherine Martin, the film's Oscar-winning costume designer, approached the brand partly due to its rich history and association with New York in the Roaring Twenties, and partly because Louis Comfort Tiffany - the brand's first design director - mixed in the Long Island social circles portrayed in F Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel.

Inspiration for the jewellery, like that seen here on Carey Mulligan (above, right) in her role as Daisy Buchanan, came from the original Tiffany archives.

"The jewellery symbolises the story's themes of wealth and privilege, and we approached its design with the utmost style and luxury in mind," says Jon King, the brand's executive vice president. The collection includes chandelier earrings with rose-cut diamonds, bracelets of diamonds and seed pearls, sapphire and diamond rings and earrings of cushion-cut black onyx or emerald-cut aquamarines.

The showpieces, however, are the Savoy (pictured, top) a spectacular headdress made out of intricately cut diamonds and cultured pearls; and the hand bracelet (left) with a daisy motif. The daisy is also featured in a stunning long-stemmed brooch (right). Gatsby, of course (played by Leonardo diCaprio), not one to be left on the sidelines, is endowed with such delicacies as a sterling silver slender card case and flask that fit smoothly in the pockets of his tailored linen suits and tuxedo.

Pieces from the collection will be on display in Tiffany & Co's flagship store in Dubai Mall throughout this month and though you could own a version yourself, it will by special order only and cost around $50,000 (Dh184,000). However, to mark the film's release and their involvement, the brand has also produced the Ziegfield, a collection of elegant, classic pieces with designs "inspired by the glamour of Jazz Age". Prices start from Dh686.
