Drivers taking part in the EVRT Middle East event began their third blast through the UAE and Oman on Thursday, starting the tour with a drag-racing event at Yas Marina Circuit.

Electric cars were pitched against petrol vehicles to demonstrate the former's lightning-quick acceleration, with the likes of the Tesla Model S going head-to-head with fossil-fuel burners including a McLaren 570S.

Accordingly, it was only half loud as most events at the venue, with the squeal of tyres being far louder than the minimal sound produced by the quiet, but powerful, motors of the participants' petrol-free rides.

Crowds gathered to watch the EVRT – which stands for Electric Vehicle Road Trip – drivers tackle Yas Marina Circuit's specially designed 400-metre drag course.

The cars are heading to Muscat in Oman and spending two days there, before the second leg of the event which sees drivers returning to the UAE to visit Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Dubai.

The National is taking part in the first part of the tour, so expect more updates from the road.

There will be about 18 Green Parking stations along the route to keep the vehicles, some of which can travel 500km on a single charge, on the road.

Participants will cover a total of 2,000 kilometres across the EVRT Middle East's eight-day duration.

Currently, the UAE has about 400 charging points for electric cars.
