Most people in Britain know the pure joy that comes from tucking into crunchy, battered fish and chips on a wintry day. And now those in Abu Dhabi will be able to get a taste of the action with The Chippy soon opening on Reem Island.
The restaurant, which is yet to confirm its launch date, will be importing its potatoes and fish from Northern Ireland, and will also have a selection of Irish and British products in-store for sale. Meanwhile, the menu offers up all the classics, with a plate of fresh cod and chips setting you back Dh68. It also includes haddock, scampi and The Chippy special (a choice of cod or haddock with six scampi), alongside pies, sides (think onion rings or mushy peas) and sauces (choose between tartare, curry sauce, gravy and more). There’s even battered Mars Bars, a Scottish-born delicacy, to satisfy those sugar cravings.

Bob’s Fish & Chips
An institution for those who love the British comfort food in Dubai Marina, Bob’s Fish & Chips serves up all the classics in a homely environment. Choose between classic cod or breaded cod fillets, haddock, hammour, hake and more, and wolf it down with a side of chunky chips. It also has haggis and chips (Dh78) on the menu, for those who want something a tad more offbeat.
The Fish & Chips Room
A casual joint located in Jumeirah Beach Residence, Fish & Chips Room gives you a choice between cod, haddock, cream dory and hammour, served as crispy breaded, traditional or spicy for Dh69. Sides, salads, wraps and baked potatoes with numerous toppings are also on offer.
London Fish & Chips
This much-loved chain is available in a number of food courts in malls across the UAE and pays tribute to England by naming their dishes after famous areas in London. Order Hyde Park (fish fillet with chips and a soft drink) or King’s Cross (nine pieces of shrimp with chips and a soft drink) and relish the fact that, priced at Dh34 and Dh36 respectively, you won’t be burning a hole through your pocket.
McGettigan’s
With branches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, McGettigan's is undoubtedly a favourite for classic British, Irish and Scottish dishes. A much-loved item on their menu is the fish and chips (Dh96), served with tartare sauce, mushy peas and a lemon wedge. not to mention those signature, chunky chips, of course.
Geales
For those looking for something a bit more upscale, Geales is bound to impress. Established in 1939 in the UK as a neighbourhood fish restaurant, it comes as no surprise that its Dubai chapter, located at Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa, offers three options – cod, hammour and haddock, priced between Dh120 and Dh135. You can choose your batter (tempura, chilli or lemon and black pepper) and gluten-free options are available on request.
Fish & Co
A family restaurant with a number of branches across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Fish & Co serves fresh catch cooked in natural ingredients. Diners can try out different versions of the dish from New York fish and chips (stuffed with Parmesan and topped with lemon butter sauce) to Bombay fish and chips (with Indian spices and a curry mayo dip). The London Fish and Chips with flaky cod is, of course, a star attraction.
