It's been a summer without red carpets, however, the MTV Video Music Awards has, in part, reinstated the celebrity event tradition at its 2020 ceremony.

The event was held both virtually and in person, making it the first major US awards show to take place during the coronavirus pandemic.

Filmed without a live audience and with most of the performances recorded in advance because of health guidelines, A-list names – including Bella Hadid, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus – did arrive at the event, and were photographed doing so.

Hadid wore a semi-sheer black trouser and top look to present the Tricon Award to Lady Gaga.

Gaga wore a number of eye-catching attires: to arrive, she donned a futuristic metallic Area quilted parka, with a plastic globe headpiece. With hindsight, the look is demure by the Born This Way singer's standards. After all, she wore a dress entirely made from meat to the 2010 VMAs.

Sporting more traditional red carpet looks were Sofia Carson in red Giambattista Valli and Nicole Richie in lime green Cong Tri.

Representing the men were The Weeknd, who wore a pink Richfresh suit, and Jaden Smith, who wore a colourful piece from his own brand, MSFTSrep. Machine Gun Kelly was also head-to-toe in pink, wearing a Berluti design.
